Man City's Academy: A £180m Transfer Success Story (2026)

Manchester City's Academy: A Profitable Investment

Manchester City's youth academy has become a goldmine, generating significant financial returns and contributing to the club's success. The latest sale of Jahmai Simpson-Pusey to FC Koln for £5 million showcases the academy's ability to produce talented players and generate substantial profits. This is particularly notable given the upcoming changes in Premier League financial regulations.

The sale of Simpson-Pusey, who made only six appearances for City's senior team, resulted in an initial fee of €5.5 million, with potential add-ons taking the total to €7.5 million. This is a remarkable achievement, considering the player's limited involvement with the first team. The inclusion of buy-back and matching rights clauses in the deal ensures that City can retain an interest in Simpson-Pusey's future development.

Chris Winn, a senior lecturer at UCFB and football finance expert, highlights the financial benefits of City's academy. In the past three seasons, City has averaged £60 million in profit from academy player sales, amounting to a staggering £180 million in 'pure profit' over that period. This figure is significant because it falls within the time frame considered by the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Winn explains the concept of amortisation, which is crucial to understanding City's financial strategy. When a club purchases a player, the transfer fee and associated costs are initially recorded on the balance sheet. However, the player's transfer value is then reduced over the course of their contract. For instance, if a player is bought for £50 million on a five-year deal, their value is amortised at £10 million per year. This means that if the player is sold two years into the contract, they are still worth £30 million, resulting in a profit of £70 million if sold for £100 million.

The key advantage of City's academy is that the costs of developing homegrown talent cannot be attributed to a single player. As a result, these players do not carry a transfer value on the balance sheets, making their sale highly profitable. Winn emphasises that this approach allows City to generate substantial accounting profits, even if the players are sold for high amounts.

The upcoming changes in financial regulations, with the PSR being replaced by the Squad Cost Ratio (SCR), will not diminish City's incentive to sell academy players. In fact, Winn believes that the new rules will further encourage such sales. City's participation in the Champions League and their ability to generate significant revenue from the Etihad's expansion, new hotel, and hospitality streams provide a strong foundation for their financial success.

The club's ranking in the Deloitte Football Money League, where they are among the top six in terms of revenue, highlights their financial strength. This enables City to be strategic in their player sales, allowing them to navigate financial regulations effectively. The ability to generate substantial profits from academy players while maintaining a strong first team is a testament to City's well-run and sustainable approach to football.

As City embarks on a new era with Pep Guardiola's departure, the academy's profitability will remain a crucial aspect of their continued dominance. The club's ability to produce talented players and generate financial returns is a key factor in their long-term success, providing a solid foundation for the future.
