In the wake of the devastating Northern Rivers floods in 2022, the destruction of homes and the subsequent waste management crisis sparked a critical reevaluation of our approach to reconstruction. The traditional method of demolishing homes, resulting in the disposal of valuable materials in landfills, became a focal point of scrutiny. This prompted the exploration of innovative solutions, such as the Circular Timber Project, which aimed to salvage and reuse materials from flood-damaged homes, offering a more sustainable and community-centric alternative to demolition. The project, led by the NSW Reconstruction Authority, Living Lab Northern Rivers, and the University of Technology Sydney, focused on recovering premium old-growth timbers, a resource that is increasingly difficult to source. The Circular Timber Project proposed a deconstruction approach, carefully dismantling homes to salvage valuable materials like hardwood timbers, pressed metal ceilings, and Federation red bricks. This method not only reduced waste and carbon emissions but also preserved the cultural and historical significance of the homes for the local community.
